Clock Watch Water Resistant

Watch care and maintenance: tips for summer and beyond

A watch is a precision mechanism that, with proper care, can last a lifetime.

Watches are much more than instruments for telling time: they are valuable everyday objects and symbols of style. Knowing how to care for them properly is the best way to preserve their beauty and reliability.

Protecting the watch from water and humidity

Humidity and water infiltration are among the main enemies of watches. They can seriously damage the mechanism and reduce its lifespan. It is therefore essential to understand how to prevent these risks.

Sealing gaskets

Watches have gaskets at the crystal, caseback, crown, and pushers, which prevent water from entering. Over time, however, these components deteriorate or deform. It is recommended to check water resistance every 2 to 4 years, depending on usage.

Sudden temperature changes

Going from sun exposure at 40 °C to sudden immersion in cold water can cause the gaskets to expand or contract, reducing their effectiveness.

Risk situations

Thermal baths, spas, and jacuzzis can deform rubber, Teflon, or nylon gaskets due to high temperatures. For this reason, it is best to avoid wearing your watch in these contexts.

Tip: have the water resistance checked regularly by a qualified service and avoid exposing your watch to extreme temperature changes.

Regular cleaning and maintenance

A well-maintained watch not only keeps its flawless appearance but also preserves the correct functioning of its internal mechanism.

Basic cleaning

You can use a soft-bristled brush and lukewarm water with a few drops of neutral soap to clean the metal parts and crystal. Do it carefully, as some soaps can affect metals and gaskets. Always make sure the crown is fully closed before wetting the watch.

Watch cleaning

As a safer alternative, wipe it with a microfiber cloth every few days to prevent dirt build-up. Metal bracelets can be cleaned separately, ideally in an ultrasonic bath at your trusted jeweller.

Caring for leather and fabric straps

Leather and fabric are sensitive to perspiration, skin pH, and environmental conditions. To keep them in good condition:

  • Let straps dry in the open air overnight and avoid storing them in closed cases.
  • Alternate between several straps and reserve leather ones for cold or temperate seasons.
  • Clean them with a slightly damp cloth and allow them to dry completely.
  • If the leather begins to crack, apply a specific conditioner occasionally.
