The 4Cs of diamonds: The ultimate guide to choosing the perfect diamond

When it comes to buying a diamond, whether for an engagement ring or any other piece of jewelry, understanding the 4Cs of diamonds is essential. This system, developed by the GIA® (Gemological Institute of America), is the standard method for evaluating a diamond’s quality and value. The 4Cs represent Carat (weight), Color, Clarity, and Cut. Each of these factors influences both the appearance and the price of the diamond.

Discover how the 4Cs can help you choose the ideal diamond.

  1. C for Carat (weight)
The weight of the diamond, measured in carats, is one of the most recognized factors in the diamond world. One carat equals 0.2 grams, and the larger the weight, the more expensive the diamond.
However, carat weight isn’t the only thing that matters. For example, a smaller diamond with better color, clarity, and cut can be more brilliant and attractive than a larger one with lower quality. The trick is to find the best balance.

Tip: Look for diamonds between 0.9 and 1 carat for a good quality-price ratio.

  1. C for Color
The color of a diamond is graded on a scale that ranges from D (colorless) to Z (yellow or brownish tones). The most valued diamonds are those that are completely colorless (D-F).
Although colorless diamonds are the most prized, certain unique hues, such as pink, blue, or intense yellow, are exceptional and highly valuable. These are known as fancy diamonds.

Avoid common mistakes:
Don’t confuse diamonds with slight color with fancy colors. The former are less valuable, while the latter are rare and exclusive.

  1. C for Clarity
Clarity measures the purity of a diamond. Internal imperfections (inclusions) or external imperfections (blemishes) are graded on a scale that ranges from:

• FL (Flawless): No visible imperfections under 10x magnification.
• I (Included): Imperfections visible to the naked eye.

Diamonds with fewer inclusions reflect light better, but some imperfections are so tiny that they don’t affect the overall appearance. This can be a good opportunity to find a diamond with a better quality-price ratio.

Professional tip: Look for diamonds with a VS1 or VS2 grade. They are visually perfect and more affordable than FL or IF diamonds.

  1. C for Cut
The cut is the only factor entirely determined by human skill. It doesn’t refer to the shape (round, oval, etc.), but rather to how the diamond is cut to maximize its brilliance. A well-cut diamond allows light to reflect and disperse within, creating its characteristic sparkle.

The GIA® grading for cut includes:
• Excellent
• Very Good
• Good
• Fair
• Poor

Prioritize cut: A diamond with an excellent cut will shine brighter than one with a poor cut, regardless of its weight or clarity.
